Virginia election #HotTakes from a new Virginian who hates both parties ☺
1. Nobody likes Joe Biden or Terry McAuliffe and the myth of the "Competent Businessman Turned Politician" still exists (Why? Nobody knows).
2. The Democrats abandoned the working class at least a decade ago and seemingly don’t even pretend to mind (spoiler: look at any election map since let’s say 2010).
2a. “Which working class?" is a valid question, as the media insists on dividing the working class into racialized divisions (as opposed to occupational/geographical). The answer is, umm… all of them? If you don’t donate to the DNC, the Democrats are not your friend. Trump’s biggest coup was making the GOP a workers' party. And no, not just white workers, like the beltway media who has never worked an hourly job will tell you.
3. McAuliffe walked into a GOP trap by making the election about schools and school choice. The Democrats need upper middle class suburban voters. Telling them they’re bad parents is probably not the way to do that.
4. The GOP then sprung said trap by tying schools and crime (what should be two unrelated campaign issues). Again, upper middle class suburban voters really hate crime.
5. State-wide resentment toward Nova is real and only growing. I’m new to the state, so maybe it’s always been high, but it sure seems really high.
6. "2016 Trump/Clinton Media Syndrome" where the media refuses to believe McAuliffe was losing bc they looked…
