STD S2, E5: Um, I forgot it was on…
So here’s the thing: I’m a huge Star Trek nerd.
Take whatever idea you have about a Star Trek nerd and quadruple it. Others know the production details better — I can’t name who directed or starred in specific episodes, for example— but I know the Star Trek universe inside and out and I’d wager on myself against anyone except, maybe, like, the Okudas. I’ve seen episodes, movies, and behind the scenes specials more times than I can even begin to start counting. All of this is to say that if anyone should be aware of when a new episode of Star Trek happens, it’s the guy who basically treats Star Trek like it’s real and reviews the damn show for fun.
I forgot Star Trek Discovery was on last night.
The move from Sunday to Thursday was not just a desperate move to counter The Orville, it’s evidence that the people in charge don’t understand their audience or the market. They want more viewers, right? In the 2010s, you get more viewers through social media engagement. You want social media engagement? Don’t bury your show on Thursday night when it’s up against things like Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Gotham, The Orville, and Grey’s Anatomy. More to the point, STD is on-demand, so there’s no imperative to watch the damn show at 8:30pm on Thursday. There’s literally no incentive to watch the goddamned show other than the paid shills, err, I mean…
