Star Trek: Tarantino — Sure, why not?

Apparently JJ Abrams has given Quentin Tarantino the opportunity to make a new Star Trek film. Lots of people think this is a good idea. Lots of people think this is a bad idea.

My name is Captain James T. Kirk and I’m putting together a special team…

Some of the immediate pushback is that Star Trek shouldn’t be R-rated. Ok… that’s a dumb objection. Others are complaining that Trekkies want more JJ films, not another reboot of the franchise. Fact-check: Zero Trekkies want more JJ films. Still others question where the film would fit in relation to Star Trek Discovery. Who cares about Star Trek Discovery? It’s not canon.

Let’s go over some pros and cons of a Tarantino-led Star Trek movie…

Pros:

  • Quentin Tarantino is a brilliant auteur and the best storyteller alive
  • Quentin Tarantino is a huge Trekkie and doesn’t have to binge-watch the original series after he agrees to make the movie (cough JJ Abrams cough)
  • A Tarantino Trek movie could be one of the best sci-fi movies in recent memory, like the successes of his other genre-specific films

Cons:

  • STD already destroyed the Star Trek franchise, so there are no cons.
You know what they call a Quarter Pounder with cheese in space?
