#CountdownTo1701: Three things that are NOT the problem with Star Trek Discovery
Diversity. A lot of the narrative around the divide between those who love Discovery and those who loathe it has somehow wrapped around this idea that STD haters hate the diversity, and especially hate the female characters for simply being female. This is a complete misunderstanding of why people dislike the characters.
As a matter of fact, I have the very first article published on medium addressing this “controversy” back in June of 2017. If there are people who hate the diversity of the cast because they’re sexist or bigoted, they’re assholes and not Trekkies.
Star Trek has been diverse since, literally, day one when Roddenberry made Number One the XO of the Enterprise. Diversity is fundamental to Star Trek, and not just color, not just gender, but also nationality. Uhura was a big deal in 1967, and so was Chekov a year later. What we now call “social justice” has framed every series of Star Trek.
Visuals. The visuals certainly are *a* problem, but they’re not *the* problem. If anything…
